From July to September 2026, I worked closely with Black Winter on their long-awaited comeback album, helping the band translate an ambitious and uncompromising vision into a finished record.
Black Winter first earned a degree of obscure underground notoriety during the early 2000s, becoming known within the worldwide black-metal scene through their demos, split releases and live appearances. After years away, the band returned with renewed purpose and entrusted me with the sound of Black Winter in reclaiming their identity and establishing that they are now here to stay.
Their prior recording process involved several false starts in the studio, substantial arrangement changes and performances captured across different sessions and circumstances. Inevitably, this created a demanding editing process, with songs having to be carefully reconstructed, refined and balanced without losing the aggression, atmosphere or humanity at the heart of the band’s sound.
My fascination with extreme music across its full spectrum, amongst other gengres I enjoy, proved invaluable throughout the project and helped shape the choice of reference productions. These influences and my experience as a listener informed the album’s weight, clarity and impact, while ensuring that the final sound remained unmistakably Black Winter.
The result is a record that respects the band’s origins while presenting them with greater scale, focus and power. It captures the intensity of their past, but sounds firmly directed towards their future.
